Morphemes and Lexemes versus “ Morphemes or Lexemes ? ”

چکیده
More than a century after the first linguistic definition of the notion of morpheme by Baudoin de Courtenay (1895) and Sweet (1876), an ever-lasting debate – which I shall refer here as the “Morpheme or Lexeme” (M or L) debate – on the nature of linguistic bricks is still going on. Since a by-product of this debate is terminological confusion in the use of the four notions of morpheme, lexeme, word and item, I shall start by describing very briefly the conflicting uses of these terms and then show that to accounting for the generation of the lexicon, i.e. of both new senses and new lexical units, requires accepting the co-existence of two distinct semantic stocks and explaining how morphemes which belong to the first stock may become lexemes or be involved in lexeme-formation processes.

Abstract: This research has been carried out in the framework of Auto segmental-metrical (AM) phonology to study the stress in Persian. Two types of abstract and concrete prominences were distinguished in which the first one refers to the stress and the second one refers to the pitch accent. Stress is assumed to be a lexical property of the lexemes, but pitch accent is assumed to be an intonati...
متن کاملExpanding the Lexicon for a Resource-Poor Language Using a Morphological Analyzer and a Web Crawler
Resource-poor languages may suffer from a lack of any of the basic resources that are fundamental to computational linguistics, including an adequate digital lexicon. Given the relatively small corpus of texts that exists for such languages, extending the lexicon presents a challenge. Languages with complex morphology present a special case, however, because individual words in these languages ...
متن کاملA Morphological Lexicon of Esperanto with Morpheme Frequencies
This paper discusses the internal structure of complex Esperanto words (CWs). Using a morphological analyzer, possible affixation and compounding is checked for over 50,000 Esperanto lexemes against a list of 17,000 root words. Morpheme boundaries in the resulting analyses were then checked manually, creating a CW dictionary of 28,000 words, representing 56.4% of the lexicon, or 19.4% of corpus...
متن کاملEarly and Late Effects of Morphological Decomposition: Brain Correlates of Family Size Effects on Complex Words and Pseudowords
In three ERP experiments, morphology-based decomposition of words and pseudowords was explored in Spanish. Subjects were asked to perform a lexical decision task on morphologically simple (e.g. ‘sun’) and complex (e.g. ‘allerg+ic’, ‘allerg+ist’) word strings, while family size for both lexemes/stems (S-FS) and morphemes/suffixes (M-FS) was varied. In Experiment I, earlier results by Schreuder &...
متن کاملDisturbling News from the Thirteenth Century: Variation in a Borrowed Lexeme in Middle English
It is sometimes assumed that the process of reanalysis of a borrowed prefix as productive is a simple process of detachment from the borrowed base and subsequent re-attachment to a native one. If this is reanalysis, however, it is so in a limited sense. It is not, for example, an instance of ambiguity resolution (see Lewis 1998: 2489), since the result of the process is to add to the stock of m...
